ABOUt

As Director of Research Services, I provide professional services leadership to support the University to deliver excellent research that has an impact on economy and society.

My primary focus is on research strategy, policy, governance, and income generation, with a lead role in preparations for the next Research Excellence Framework, having gained significant experience through managing submissions to the RAE 2008, REF 2014, and REF 2021. I'm a member of various policy and operations groups including Research Leadership Group, Research Innovation and Knowledge Exchange Committee, Researcher Concordat Operations Group and the Climate Action Steering Group.

Specifically, my current areas of work include

  • research strategy development, including strategic investment initiatives to support delivery
  • research policy, including REF 2029
  • research governance and compliance
  • research income generation
  • research culture and environment, including EDI and change management
  • research management systems and operational improvement
  • sector stakeholder engagement

An alumnus of the University of Essex, I gained a first degree in Biological Sciences and later a PhD in plant physiology from the University of Sheffield. I am a long-standing member of the Association of Research Managers and Administrators (ARMA).

I am particularly supportive of researcher development, and the advancement of women in their careers; I'm a mentor both within Sheffield Hallam and also ARMA.  I am an Information Governance Guardian at the University and, more recently, have become a Hallam Open Research Champion and a Green Champion.
