ABOUt

I am a lecturer, writer and researcher with over 20 years of teaching experience in the Performing Arts. My research and teaching focuses on LGBTQ+ representation across musical theatre, theatre, film and television, and I am particularly interested in connecting academia with industry practitioners and audiences through public events and networks.

I co-produced Fantasies Come True: the queermusicals.com concert at The Other Palace theatre, London in 2023, and I host Represent: the queermusicals.com podcast with guests from theatre, television and film. My website www.queermusicals.com is a core resource for musical theatre students and receives thousands of hits per month from across the world. My monograph LGBTQ+ characters and queer representation in contemporary musicals will be published by Methuen Drama in 2026.

I previously worked as a performer and director in musical theatre and improvised comedy. I was the original pianist for Showstopper! The Improvised Musical between 2007 and 2010, and I founded and directed Baron Sternlook's Improvised Musical between 2013 and 2020. More recently, I established the LGBTQ Performing Arts Research Project at the University of Wolverhampton and directed three concert-lectures with the group. I presented three series of webinars and panels for ArtsFest between 2021 and 2022, and the fourth series of my podcast Represent! - The Queermusicals.com podcast will be released later this year as part of a British Academy ECRN seed funding project on Queer Gain in Contemporary Musical Theatre.
