ABOUt

I am an artist and filmmaker working at the intersection of artists’ moving image and documentary. I am a former recipient of the Philip Leverhulme Research Prize for Performing and Visual Arts, hold an MA from the Royal College of Art, London, and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Working with moving image, sound, photography and archival materials, my research explores neglected social history narratives from the margins, sharing stories of community, resistance, and the making of place. There is a concurrent interest in the ‘silences’ in history, and the power relations in whose stories are heard. My practice frequently repositions archival material and oral histories to examine the complex relationships between cultural heritage, memory, testament and storytelling.

My research includes the feature-length films DUST & METAL (Cat Bụi & Kim Loại) (2022) and ASUNDER (2016), as well as short-form films and gallery installations including Liberation Radio (2021–), Ships in the Sky (2019–), a ROLE to PLAY (2019), a share of a pensioner’s Christmas ‘Bonus’ (2016), and Alone Together: the Social Life of Benches (2010). These projects, along with other works, have been shared internationally in over 40 countries through exhibitions, cinema screenings and broadcast. Screenings and exhibitions include Barbican, London; BFI London Film Festival; CPH:DOX, Copenhagen; ICA, London; Hull 2017; International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam; International Short Film Festival Oberhausen; Istanbul Biennial; Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival; Landscape Institute; NASA, California; Sheffield Doc/Fest; Tate galleries, London; and the Venice Biennale. Film works have been broadcast on BBC and Channel 4, and audio works on ABC Australia, BBC Radio 4, Resonance FM and RTÉ.

Support for my work has included Arts Council England; Arts and Humanities Research Council; BBC; British Council (UK and Vietnam); Channel 4; Creative Skillset; DCMS; Film London Artists’ Film and Video Award; Film and Video Umbrella; Heritage Lottery Fund; James Reckitt Library Trust; Jerwood Arts; Kulturrådet, Stockholms stad and Region Stockholm; National Endowment for the Arts (USA); National Lottery; Radio Arts; Science Museum Group; Screen Yorkshire; Sheffield Children’s Festival; Sound and Music; Sunderland Cultural Partnership; The Leverhulme Trust; WW1 14–18 NOW; and Yorkshire Arts.

I have curated film and artists’ moving image programmes for galleries and film festivals, and written for a range of academic and arts publications. My work is held in the special collections of the British Artists’ Film and Video Study Collection (Central Saint Martins, London), the Science Museum Group (UK), Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center, Buffalo (USA), and the Yorkshire Film Archive (UK). Distribution of short works is through ARGOS Centre for Art and Media, Brussels, and Vtape, Toronto.
