TEACHING & SUPERVISION
I teach across a wide range of subjects, including linguistics, creative writing and professional writing. My approach to learning and teaching is student-centred, empathy-based, scaffolded and careers-focused. I enjoy experimenting with digital learning as a way of improving confidence and inclusivity. I have developed a new way of teaching the principles of grammar, which is currently used in first-year language modules and in my textbook Refreshing Grammar (2023).
Postgraduate supervision
I have been on the supervisory team for the following PhD theses:
- Flying Lessons: Marginalisaion, Brexlit and whose stories are heard (Dr Naomi Frisby)
- The non-sexist language debate in French and English (Dr Ann Coady)
- Encounters between theory and practice: Semiotic and pragmatic principles in advertising (Dr Stuart Foster)
- Poetic effects and visuospatial form: a relevance-theoretic perspective. (Dr Daniel Pinder)
