RESEARCH, INNOVATION & KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE
Penny’s practice is committed to the idea that art operates at the edge of knowledge and experience, always opening into what we think we know. Her recent film Cloud falls in Love with mortal sought to share a sense of what it is like to make drawings and make palpable the making/thinking space of drawing practice to a broad audience.
Pencil drawing is used an epistemological mode of inquiry to transcribe and re-configure material often sourced from archives of art history and science.Works on paper evolve slowly over time, the silent stilled state of drawing opens up a space for reflection. In different ways, over the years, her practice has been a form of affective negotiation with archival artefacts – a process that might be described as an echolocation, testing or provocation. Drawing is used to transcribe and re-configure material often sourced from archives of art and science. In this way the source is ‘othered’ through drawn replicas, displaced, interrogated and refreshed by removal from its original context. Each recurrence of the source multiplies the meanings of itself and its context.
