Chris is a Senior Lecturer in Education and Post Graduate Research Tutor in Education. His research is inherently interdisciplinary and creative. Drawing on literacy, neurodiversity studies and arts practice his research explores and articulates the complexities of people’s lives in ways that are applicable across a range of social and institutional contexts.
Chris' research converges around a focus on people’s lived experience of the world. This includes exploration of neurodiversity, literacies, pop(ular) culture; physical, virtual and hybrid space; affective and sensory experience. He developed the concept of 'neurodivergent literacies' to explore the cultural experiences of people considered to be neurodivergent.
He has employed various visual and aural modes in his own academic work. His monograph - as study of a children's after school club - used comic strips, illustration and a focus on soundscapes as a means of exploring theory and representing the complexity of the social world. In the Ruling Passions project he curated an online gallery of participant work, and produces an ongoing podcast series. He is currently using a range of multimedia practice based methods in a project titled 'Escaping the Post Affect Society'.
He was awarded the Wiley / UK Literacy Association Research (UKLA) in Literacy Education Award in 2017 and the UKLA Student Research Award in 2018.
