As Professor of Clinical Science, I have experience in leading a broad programme of research in human trauma and surgery.  Working in universities in the UK and overseas, my focus is translational research. In recognition of my scientific work, I have received six international awards in the field of burns, brain trauma, surgery and wound infection.

I currently lead the Applied Imaging research theme for the Centre for Applied Health and Social Care Research.

After qualifying, care of burned children inspired my research interests. I received National/International recognition winning a number of scientific prizes in paediatric trauma. Later, as an MRC scientist, I led the metabolic research programme on childhood burns. Building a bespoke calorimeter to measure energy expenditure, our ‘metabolic-cart’ became the prototype for later commercial systems.

By 2000, injured brain became my research focus. Pioneering new, implantable, brain sensors, the objective was to forge new ways to reduce secondary, ischaemic brain damage. Results were controversial, challenging existing dogma, specifically on brain temperature.

In 2009, invited to the National University of Singapore, I explored new invasive and non-invasive imaging modalities for sepsis, brain-injury diagnosis and wound infection. Back in the UK, my research programme combines my interests of non-invasive imaging diagnosis in trauma; the injured body (with a focus on surgical site infection) and, as we enter an era of brain injury awareness, the injured brain; specifically concussion in sport. Most recently my research path has reached another fork in my scientific journey, applying my imaging skills in the field of endovascular revascularisation.

Within Health and Social Care Research, I lead the Applied Imaging theme.
