His main research areas are in comparative institutional economics, political economy and macroeconomics. He is proficient in the use and application of econometric techniques, specialising in panel data analysis, hierarchical discriminant analysis, factor analysis and structural equation modelling. Drew uses the latest statistical software, with particular emphasis on STATA. 

He is a member of the International Business & Economics Research Group (IBERG), Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute (SPERI) and the Royal Economics Society. His PhD is in the field of Institutional Economics, and his Masters thesis was titled 'The Political Economy of Capital Account Liberalisation in Emerging Markets: Demanding Economic Interventionism by Method of Pragmatic Macroprudential Reregulation'.
