Media and Communications Training: The ARC Project

The ARC project builds on my personal media involvement over the last 20 years. It has become increasingly obvious that journalism and media in general is arguably in crisis with significant miss-truths, manipulation of data and vested interests being promoted in an “information-sphere” that as well as including “traditional” media outputs (radio, TV and Newspapers) the more informal online media platforms are very powerful in creating narratives.

This projects seeks to empower Staff and Students (through media and communication training) to engage more effectively in traditional media outputs but also engage effectively in online media platforms having Podcasts and Vlogs embedded in the training as well as developing confidence and the emotional resilience to engage with what is often an aggressive media “sphere” through “standard” and role play exercises as well as familiarity with the technology and techniques used by more informally trained journalists.

In addition to training in effective external media engagement, it is hoped that these skills will include an internal nature of data management of comms by staff and students so they will be able to employ media outputs more effectively. This will assist in the control of narratives in a positive way, that is both empowering personally but also improves the student voice and effective outreach and dissemination of academic work here in SHU.
