EXTERNAL & PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT
I have worked with a range of non-academic partners throughout my time at SHU, and currently lead the university's participation in the Sheffield Lakeland Partnership, a multi-stakeholder group (SHU, Sheffield City Council, Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water, Natural England) led by the Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust which is committed to delivering a 10-year strategy for sustainable, resilient landscape management in the Upper Don catchment.
I am SHU's academic liaison and primary contact with the charity Council for At-Risk Academics (Cara), which works to provide routes to sanctuary for academics at risk of violence and persecution worldwide. I represent Cara on the University-wide Sanctuary Steering Group, advocating for, supporting and promoting the University's commitment to supporting Cara in this work, including funding and hosting scholars on Cara Fellowships, as part of our University of Sanctuary accreditation which I have supported and contributed to since its conception. My contribution to Cara includes acting as an academic mentor to displaced Syrian academics in Turkey as part of the Cara Syria Programme (2021-2024), supporting the design and delivery of ground-breaking research on the environmental situation in north-west Syria during the latter years of the Assad regime, and mentoring my Syrian colleagues to publish and publicise their research and continue their academic careers as the post-Assad situation continues to unfold.
From 2019-2024 I served on the Yorkshire regional committee of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS), first as Secretary and then as Chair, lead the organisation of regional programmes of lectures and events, and contributing to the national Regions Committee.
I am an experienced academic peer reviewer of research grants and papers. I am a current member of the NERC Peer Review College (since 2011), have reviewed for a range of UKRI organisations, and have participated as an expert reviewer internationally including UEFISCDI (Romania) and NSERC (Canada). I review for a wide range of environmental journals, and in 2025 served as an Associate Editor for the journal Scientific Reports.
