TEACHING & SUPERVISION
I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and have taught extensively at undergraduate and postgraduate level since 2012. My main areas of teaching are in water resources and natural hazards and in the supervision of dissertation and thesis research projects. As well as subject-specific knowledge, my goal in teaching is to develop strong applied skills in critical thinking, creative problem-solving and communication of ideas.
I lead the MSc Environmental Management at SHU, having taken on this role in 2020 and led a successful redesign and revalidation of the course in 2024-25. This involved a complete refresh and re-synthesis of the curriculum and assessment style, mapping the course closely to real world professional competencies in the environment sector (for example, the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management CIWEM) and profiling assignments to model a wide range of professional experiences including CPD, personal development planning, technical review, project planning and reporting as well as specific technical skills such as GIS, environmental data analysis, EIA, environmental management systems and ecological assessment.
I place a strong focus on supportive academic advising of students from a wide range of academic and international backgrounds, working hard to develop collegial and constructive cohort cultures within an atmosphere of critical enquiry.
