ABOUt

I am a Senior Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing. I am the lead for the Recognising and assessing medical problems in psychiatric settings (RAMPPS) programme at the University. I am interested in the creation of high-fidelity simulation based teaching to aid learners in a protected learning environment to develop their skills to support others. I am a PMVA and BLS instructor for the MSc and BSc nursing courses. I lecture in a broad range of topics related to mental health nursing, and am particularly interested in working in the areas of crisis assessment, suicide and self harm.

 

I am a co-founder and Director of the Heavy Metal Therapy project (registered CIC).

 

Clinical Background:

I worked as a Support Worker for 8 years before qualifying as a Registered mental health nurse. I am a firm believer in person centred care, empowerment, informed choice, development and maintenance of therapeutic relationships. Principles of risk management and appropriate practice to reduce risk through utilisation of risk assessments, adopting principles of de-escalation or physical intervention whilst providing for the safety and dignity of the patient. I worked on acute ward in the RDASH Trust for 6 months followed by 18 months on a PICU ward for the Sheffield Health Partnership University NHS Foundation trust. In 2013 I started work as a Band 6 CMHN for the Out of Hours (Crisis) team for the same trust.  Areas of interest include crisis management, crisis planning, CTO, Section 136, Risk assessment, Suicide and Self Harm, psycho-social interventions including DBT, CBT and Solution Focused Therapy.
