Gill has extensive experience in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels on tourism-specific and management related modules. Her academic background lies in Tourism Studies and she has researched and taught at UK universities since the 1990s. She supervises and examines PhD and DBA (Doctorate of Business Administration) students in areas relating to her research interests and particularly in adventure tourism. She also runs group supervision sessions with the DBA students and delivers sessions about her research.
Gill's research focuses primarily on psychological aspects of adventure tourists, specifically motivations encouraging participation, experiences encountered during adventure and benefits gained. Her PhD focused on adventure tourism participation and consumption. Her initial interest in adventure tourism stemmed from co-authoring one of the first text books on adventure tourism in 2003 (Adventure Tourism: The New Frontier). Since then, Gill has written a number of published research papers on adventure tourists, particularly mountaineer tourists, based on fieldwork research carried out in the French Alps. She has also co-authored a text book chapter on gender and mountaineering tourism. Currently, she is investigating family groups of adventure tourists and their adventure holiday participation and consumption patterns.
Gill is a member of the Adventure Tourism Research Association (ATRA) and the Outdoor Recreation Research Group (ORRG). She co-organised the ATRA 2015 International Adventure Conference at Sheffield Hallam University. Gill was the DBA Course Leader for several years and she has also worked in course leadership at postgraduate and undergraduate levels.
