ABOUt

In my current role as Vocational Course Operations Lead and Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Sheffield Hallam University, I oversee the day-to-day running of our vocational course portfolio including BA Criminology; Bsc Criminology and Psychology; BA Criminology and Sociology; MA/LLM Global Human Rights and Social Justice in Practice; Msc Criminology and Criminal Justice Practice. I work closely with course teams to make sure everything runs smoothly, from teaching and assessment through to placements and student support. I chair operational meetings, help translate wider university strategy into practical delivery, and keep a close eye on key areas like attendance, progression, retention and student satisfaction.

A big part of my role is supporting students and staff.

Alongside this, I collaboratively lead the Investigative Genetic Genealogy Hub, where I focus on creating meaningful placement opportunities and building partnerships that give students real-world experience. I work with both internal colleagues and external partners to develop innovative projects, embed employability into the curriculum, and explore opportunities for growth and consultancy. Across both roles, I aim to create a supportive and collaborative environment where staff feel confident and students have the best possible experience, while also contributing to wider priorities around innovation, employability and continuous improvement.

I am responsible for several of the Institute’s Foundation Years across Law, Criminology, Policing, and our joint programmes in Criminology and Psychology; Criminology and Sociology and Law with Criminology. In this role, I support students in their foundation year, helping them build the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to succeed in Higher Education. I also work to ensure that teaching, student support and the wider student experience are well integrated across the provision, so students feel supported from the very start of their journey. This work strongly aligns with one of my key priorities: widening participation. The Foundation Year is designed to break down barriers to higher education and provide a supportive, engaging entry point for students from a wide range of backgrounds. My focus is on creating a meaningful and inclusive first-year experience that not only supports academic development but also builds confidence, engagement and a strong sense of belonging.

I have trained with Ramapo College on Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG), IGG uses DNA and genealogy techniques to identity to missing body remains, victims/perpetrators in Criminal Justice cases and miscarriages of Justice. Our team has had successful identifications on a number of cases including the first UK national to be identfied with IGG after passing away in the US.
